He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The other day we looked at the 1st 2 verses of Psalm 1. This 3rd verse is the result of being in the Word daily. A tree that is planted by a stream of water is very healthy – it will have the life giving water that it needs to grow and produce.
I was just thinking about how Jesus is called the Living Water… John 4:13-14 (talking to the woman at the well) “13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
A tree that is good – is fruitful. It will produce fruit – it will reproduce itself. The same is said of us. If we are connected into the Living Water – Jesus (the Word of God) we will be fruitful. We need to be sharing the Gospel – the Good News to others around us! If you can listen to a message by Louie Giglio – Extravagant Worship, it is a wonderful message on God’s Grace. It is because of God’s Grace that we can share it with others as well!!!
I am reflecting now on the last half of this verse…. its leaf does not wither… how does that apply to our lives? Sometimes we get weary from the tasks we face…. Galatians 6:9 “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” We need to be in the Word daily – and through out our day. We need to keep our focus on God instead of the circumstances of our life. It is so easy to want to do give up. I know that the enemy wants to give up, quit, not following God. But we need to keep connected to the Living Water!
The end of the verse talks about prospering – even Galatians 6:9 talks about the prize. We may not see the goal in the moment, but if we keep on going, we will eventually see the victory!
Romans 8:28 “28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”
Are you living for HIS purpose?

Psalm 1:1-2 ESV
1 Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
I love the Psalms. For many years, I read in the Psalms daily and would use it to Praise God. It is so full of God’s majesty and grace! Psalm 1 is one of my favorite – I have most of it memorized (I might have to review it a bit).
In verse 1, we see all of the aspects of our life… walks, stands, and sits. These words describe everyday activity. We ARE suppose to be careful who we spend time. But God DID call us to share the Gospel with everyone. But these words – also point to a more intimate relationship, in this instance. We need to keep ourselves protected – IF the law of the Lord (His Word – the Bible) is our delight and we think on it day and night – it will help us to stand strong. This also makes me think of this passage…
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.
I really love how at the end of this passage it points to declaring the Gospel boldly. Are you prepared with God’s Word? Have you hidden it in your heart, meditating on it daily? I pray that you spend time in God’s Word Daily… What are ways that you spend time daily in God’s Word? Please share in the comments.
1 John 4:14-20 ESV
14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
Have you experienced this perfect love?
