Change Primary Domain Name (Wordpress on GoDaddy)

If you have just a few long established web sites, you will NOT want to be changing Primary Domain Names ... but if you are like me, and you are often creating multiple sites for multiple purposes, there might come a time when you want to change a primary domain name.

And since I do occasionally need to change a domain name, I am saving my notes here for safe keeping.

These instructions apply to Wordpress installations on GoDaddy.

On GoDaddy visit "my Account"

At Web Hosting, click Launch

Select the web site name, click Manage

Under Options and Settings, scroll down to Settings, Click "Domain Change (Primary)"

0001-Domain change primary

Select the new domain name you want

In my experience, just changing the primary domain name in GoDaddy's settings never quite works.

The settings usually need to be manually updated in the WordPress tables as well, by using phpMyAdmin.  Here's how:

1.  Before you do anything else, FTP into the root file of your wordpress installation.  Open up the wp-config.php file, and save it as a text file.  The reason is that it contains the wordpress database username and password, and you will need these later.

2.  Sign in to GoDaddy.  Click Visit My Account.

3.  Click the Launch button to the right of Web Hosting.

4.  Locate the web site name, click Manage.

5.  Scroll down to the section titled Databases.  Click MySQL.

6.  In the section Manage Databases, locate the database name (if you have multiple databases, refer to the copy you made of wp-config.php to be sure you have the correct name).  Click phpMyAdmin.

7.  Enter the database username and password (from the copy you made of wp-config.php)

8.  The Starfield Technologies screen opens.  In the left column, click the database name

9.  All your wordpress tables will appear

10.  From the list, look for wp_options. Note: The table prefix of wp_ may be different if you changed it when installing.

11.  Click on the browse icon.  It is the first icon in the row, a small square with a column marking.

12.  A screen will open with a list of the fields within the wp_options table.

13. Click on the browse tab.  Under the column heading option_name, scroll down and and find site_url.  Note that the fields can be displayed in alphabetical order by clicking on the column heading.

14. Click the edit field icon at the far left at the beginning of the row. The edit field window will appear.

15.  In the input box for option_value, carefully change the URL information to the new address.  Verify this is correct and click Go to save the information.  You should be returned to your wp_options table.

16.  Look for the home field in the table and click Edit Field. Note There are several pages of tables inside wp_options. Look for the > symbol to page through them.  In the input box for option_value, carefully change the URL information to the new address.  Verify this is correct and click Go to save the information.

WordPress ... Remove Comment Box....

Go to Pages->all pages. Then hover over the page name and select "quick edit". Now uncheck "allow comments".
