Interested in protein translation? Please take a look at this article that recently appeared in EMBO reports:

Sumoylation of eIF4E Activates mRNA Translation

Jing Hu and colleagues

Work by Hu and colleagues shows that mammalian eIF4E is regulated by SUMO-1 conjugation, which promotes the formation of the active eIF4F translation initiation complex and induces the translation of a subset of proteins that are essential for cell proliferation and preventing apoptosis. These results indicate that sumoylation represents a novel fundamental regulation mechanism of protein synthesis.
