My Journey with Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking. . . Yes, I know some of you are rolling your eyes. Yes, I know some of you have never scrapbooked anything in your entire life and never will. Yes, I know you only like making cards and other papercrafting projects. So indulge me today to tell you a bit about why I scrapbook and the different ways I have scrapbooked.

I grew up in a family with seven children. Taking photographs was not something that happened often because it was expensive. Most of our photographs were of all the children together. When I was eight, my dad unexpectedly died. We had to go on public assistance for a few years. Photographs were even more scarce. Eventually, my oldest sister saved her money, bought a camera and she began taking photographs of our family.

When I had children, I vowed that I would take photographs of their entire lives, which I did. They both have baby books with some photos, but most of the photographs and negatives went into a plastic bin.

And, there they stayed until I became a Stampin' Up! demonstrator in 1997.

Traditonal scrapbooking

I began traditional scrapbooking using 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock and stamped images.

From 2009-2015, Stampin' Up! offered My Digital Studio designing software. That is when I started digital scrapbooking.

And, I realized that I needed to change to 12" x 12" scrapbook layouts. Why? I can get more photographs on each page. I have the pages printed and put them in page protectors and then in three-ring binder scrapbooks.

The thought of scanning over 30 years of photographs became daunting, so I started using 12" x 12" pocket-style page protectors in my albums. This was a quick way to catch up with all those envelopes of photographs.  I'm not going to lie. It is overwhelming to try to keep up with current scrapbooking while doing catch-up scrapbooking. But, I was determined and eventually finished thanks to many weekend retreats!

When Stampin' Up! stopped offering My Digital Studio, I began using My Memories Suite software (they were the developers of My Digital Studio). I have been using this software since 2015.

Printed book scrapbook

I started making 12" x 12" hard-bound scrapbooks through My Memories Suite for our vacations. They become coffee table books until we take our next vacation. Then they go on my shelves of scrapbooks.

Last weekend, one of my team members, Sandy McManus, asked me if I had started using the Project Life app. She has been asking me this for at least a year. I have been happy using My Memories Suite for five years, why would I start using something else? As I sat in the recliner watching TV with Dan, I downloaded the free Project Life app and started looking at it. It came with free layouts, so I created this page in minutes. And, I was on my phone, not on my laptop in my studio!

Here is the first 12" x 12" layout I made using Project Life's digital pocket-style scrapbooking. Ready for this? I finished 24 layouts when I had a few minutes throughout the next couple of days. I was shocked how simple it was. I even ordered these pages to be printed from my phone! The printed pages arrived and I'm SO pleased with how they turned out.

My thanks to Sandy for bugging asking me once again about the Project Life app. Like with anything in life, timing is everything! So my scrapbooking journey is changing once again. What is fun for me is to look at my scrapbooks and see memories preserved  in all the different ways I have been scrapbooking since 1997.

If you are still reading this long blog post, thank you! If I inspire you to begin scrapbooking, I would love to hear your story about it! I must dash, as I have lunch with a friend in an hour (as I'm still in my PJ's). Thanks for stopping by!

And, that wraps up the 2020 Annual Catalog Product Extravaganza! Now for a moment of truth. Did you know that I wasn't particularly fond of the Whale of a Time Suite Collection when I first saw it? Truth! Because it was an important part of the catalog, I "took one for the team" and showcased it. Much to my surprise, it was fun to create with the products. The Whale of a Time Designer Series Paper was my favorite because it had such beautiful images to use as backgrounds or to fussy cut. And, now I have some unique cards to mail out to family and friends.
