For this analogy, I'm using the stats last updated 7/28/20 at 2:50 pm CDT from Coronavirus Realtime Updates from NewsBreak. States are listed in order of their number of cases. 1st column is # of cases, 2nd column is death, 3rd column is % of deaths to number of cases.

Calif Garden Log
I need to create a simple log of what I do in my garden. Weather information is taken from Farmer's Almanac <span style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: black; display: inline !important; float: none; font-family: "OFADeck"; font-size: 1.2em; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: uppercase; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">For the Pratt Industrial Air KS USA Weather Station, <strike></strike>

7-8-20 Hooked up the drip system and watered. TEMP: 96/71, winds 17/23

7-7-20 consulted Pratt county extension office about watermelons - have twospotted spider mites. sprayed them plants down with water to remove the mites. Also sprayed the other plants. Bought some neem oil, but the youtubes say to use cold concentrate and mine is an extract, so I didn't use it much. Purchased a pump sprayer but could not get it to work.

Rainfall: #3 .41; #13 .86; #18 .56

7-6-20 lost another tomato to BER, from tote #7, my transplant. Store-bought meter tested the soil ph to be about 7.1. Nutrients very low. Applied Expert Gardener Organics 3-5-6 to the tomatoes in tote #7, tomatoes are doing poorly. One is my own transplant and the other is the WalMart transplant. Applied Epsom salt to the soil in the watermelon/cantaloupe tote to increase magnesium, thought the yellowing was from magnesium shortage.

temp 86/76, winds 10/16, rain 0.00

7-5-20 temp 91/84, rain 0.00

7-4-20 finished my raised bed for the SW wall, and filled it with all the dirt I have left -- a layer of soil, layer of plant debris, layer of leaves, soaked down, layer of rest of soil.
June 19 - Picked my first tomato today -- because it had blossom end rot. It was on the BS-2. The BB-3 has 1 tomato that has black spots on the bottom, so it may turn into Blossom End Rot, too, but the other 2 tomatoes on it appear okay. I just noticed the black spots today. Is it a coincidence that it has rained heavy today, started during the night, and we've gotten 1.69 inches so far. I didn't notice the blossom end rot on plant BS-2 yesterday, as I check the plants every day.

I blended up some egg shells with water in the blender, and applied some to both of those plants. I did put down egg shells and coffee grounds on plants BS-4 and BS-5 at the time of planting, but I don't indicate that I did the same for BS-2.

I wanted some Early Girl and JetStar, but when I was ready to plant, WalMart didn't have any and by the time they did, I already had the 6 planted.

I took some pictures of the tomatoes I can see on the plants, to see what condition they are in.

From PH-1, looks okay
This year's garden was a big experiment -- to see how much I could grow in my limited patio space, to see what I can grow, to resolve the watering problem, and to find out what I want to grow next year.

SPACE AND SUNLIGHT - My two biggest realities
The totes are working very well, with one hitch -- space. I have two rows of totes to maximize the space but that makes it very crowded. I can't access the front of my front plants unless I go outside the building, as I can't get to the front of my patio from the patio itself. But working between the two rows is a problem. And if I butt the two rows up together, I don't have a back wall for the trellis for the melons and I can't get to the front row at all without having to go outside. So that is not a solution to the space problem.

The other problem is sunlight -- I am east-facing and only get the sun from the east -- not the south or the west. Furthermore, it's a 3-story building and the patio has a roof on it, so once the sun gets directly overhead, my direct sun ends. And of course, as the sun rises, the direct sun moves across the patio from back to front. Will the back row of plants get sufficient sunlight? Last year I put the plants along the back wall for wind protection, and they did okay. And this year, with the double row, the back row is doing okay, too. They don't get optimal sunlight, but some of the plants can tolerate some periods of shade, and some even do better with some shade.

WATERING
I solved my watering problem mostly by installing a drip irrigation system. I couldn't get the supplies I really wanted to had to resort to separate drip emitters along a tube, instead of drip tape which already has the holes in it for drip. Also, because I have 14 different containers, I had to have 14 different leads. I used the t-attachments so I can do two totes at a time, but the more holes in the main line, the more opportunities to leak. But what I have, and the size of the totes, greatly simplifies my watering situation.

CHANGE TO A RAISED BED
Even though the totes are doing well, they don't act as a "single" garden. The worms can't migrate from one tote to another, the nutrients don't mix from one tote to another, and neither does the moisture. Next year, the plan is to build a raised bed, roughly 2' wide x 12' long x 1' high. This will span the East edge of my patio. This raised bed will be divided between two beds, 1'x12'x1 -- a summer garden, which is the East patio bed, and a spring garden, which is on the West.

I thought I would use planter wall boxes to form the corners, so I don't have to drill and attach boards, but they won't allow the E-side plank to be flush with the E-edge of the patio. <img alt="Planter Wall Tan Retaining Wall Block (Common: 6-In X 8-In Actual: 5" class="rms_img" data-bm="42" data-priority="2" height="86" id="emb2E753635" src="data:image/jpeg;base64,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" style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; border-collapse: collapse; border-image: none; border-spacing: 0px; border: 0px; color: #1a0dab; font-family: "arial","helvetica",sans-serif; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; list-style: none; margin: 0px; orphans: 2; padding: 0px; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; touch-action: manipulation; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;" width="86" />.
That's because of the extension beyond where the plank for the side of the raised bed will go. This will make it difficult, if not impossible, to put braces along the E side for support. I want to have the planks along the E edge of the patio.

I also thought I would use cedar planks for the front, to improve the appearance from the street, but other things I am using in the garden will make that pretty much useless. So I will use pine planks, and get the 2x6 planks that are 12 feet long. I will have a divider down the middle of the bed to separate the summer bed from the spring bed.

The standard board measurements are:
2x4 = 1 1/2 inches x 3 1/2 inches
2x6 = 1 1/2 inches x 5 1/2 inches
And the standard length measurement for a 2x12 is 11 1/4".

I want the board from to stand 1/2" above the cement floor of the patio for drainage. I will line the bottom of the frame with weed protection fabric so it will drain properly.

These are the dimensions I will be working with to make the box frame.
2 Side planks
2 End planks

This is the basic design. The two side planks, on the East and the West, will be on the outside of the box, and the end planks, on the North and the South, will be on the inside. If the side planks fall short of the length of the patio, the difference will be made up at the south end, because the north end will have a trellis attached and it needs to be flush with the edge of the patio.

The end planks will be measured as follows:

2', or 24", the intended inside width of the bed MINUS 1 1/2" x 2 = 3" to account for the width of the two side planks = 21" PLUS 1 1/2" to account for the width of the middle plank = 22 1/2". Each end plank must be 22 1/2" long.

The middle plank also goes on the inside of the end planks. One plank = 11' 1/4", or 132 1/4", long MINUS 1 1/2" x 2 = 3" to account for the two end planks = 129 1/4" or 10' 9 1/4" long. CHANGE: Use only a 2x4 the length of the box for the middle plank, as that will provide enough to attach the loops to which will support the frost and insect coverings.

The corners of the box will be secured with metal corner brackets to keep the box corners square. Use one for the top planks and one for the bottom planks. Also, screws will be drilled through the side planks into the end planks, 2 screws in each plank.

<span style="background-color: white; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">The middle plank is attached to the end planks with light duty joist hangers attached to the top end plank. Only one middle plank is used so as to allow this to be a single bed for worms, nutrients, and moisture.

<strike></strike>

On the bottom of the box, furring strips will be screwed to each plank, placed intermittently around the box. The furring strips will be the 1/2" thick x 1 1/2" wide by 1 1/2" long. These are to elevate the box above the patio cement floor to allow for adequate drainage.

With the box in its upright position and in place, will be lined with weed control fabric stapled to the inside of the box. The fabric will extend the length of the bed, the width of the whole double bed, and up the sides about 4". The inside of the box will then be lined with clear plastic along the sides, to extend down overlapping the weed fabric. The sides of the middle plank will also be lined with the plastic.

With the box in position, 4 supports will be put along the East edge. Use 2x4s cut to a point on one end, and measured to go about a foot into the ground, plus the height of the bed, which makes them about 2' long. Screw the 2x4s into the side of the box. On the West side of the box, only use them the height of the bed 2' plus 1/2" for the drainage, because they can't be driven into the ground.

For extra support to keep the west side from bowing, since its supports can't be driven into the ground, use galvanized pipe hanger to connect the side and middle planks. It can be cut into various lengths and has screw/nail holes to attach to wood. Put a couple from the top of the middle plank to the top of the west side plank, and do the same from the bottom of the middle plank to the side of the west plank. If I do this before the west side supports are attached, I might be able to push the hanger strip between the two side planks and attach it on the outer edge of the side plank.

FILL THE BEDS

Use the soil from the current totes. Fill to about 4" from the bottom, taking care to evenly distribute and not disturb the week fabric or the plastic lining. Then fill with garden refuse from current garden, chopped up into fairly small pieces. Mix in some shredded leaves. Cover this with more soil from the current totes, evenly distributed and levelled. Add more containers of worms and let them settle in. Through the winter, add more food refuse and leaves and organic soil -- enough new soil to bring the level up to at about 4" from the top. Also add more worms through the winter. When the cold temperatures hit, consistently below freezing at night, cover the bed with about 3-4" of shredded leaves and a screen covering to keep the leaves from blowing away.

Construct the screen covering using 1x2s and chicken wire. Make a simple box using the 1x2s and staple chicken wire to it. Lay it over the bed. If it won't stay in place, put some bricks on top of it. Just take it off when necessary to add more food refuse and worms to the bed. Bury the food refuse in the soil and recover with the leaves.

If the temperatures gets below 0 degrees, cover with clear plastic placed under the chicken wire screen and then put the chicken wire screen back over it. Staple the clear plastic to the bed frame in various places.

SPRING PLANTING

Plant the spring garden in the west half of the raised bed. This will allow the plants to get as much sun as they can when they are growing, and then after well-established, they will receive some shading from the summer garden. Use square foot planting. Start the plants indoors from seeds using a grow light, except for potatoes -- direct seed those. Do 2 feet of potatoes, 2 feet of lettuce, 1 foot of spinach, 2 feet of herbs, 2 feet of strawberries, and 1 foot of spring flowers. Leave the rest of the West end free for summer garden. What I plant is subject to change.

CAGES AND PEST COVERS

Build a simple rectangular cage for the potatoes, 1 foot by 2 foot by 30", to keep them upright and not hanging over other plants when they grow. Use concrete wire mesh that is also used for tomato cages. Make the rectangular cages 2 spaces across by 4 spaces across by 5 spaces high, and have 1 space with the horizontal bottom wire cut for the bottom of the cage. See pictures for prototype tomato cage. Sink the cage into the raised bed to the depth of the bottom space, and staple it to the side and middle panel. This will also help protect from wind as the potatoes grow.

Protect the plants from pests by using a pest cover. Attach straps to the middle and side planks to hold the pvc pipe. Use 3/8" pipe and loop it across the top of the bed. Lay the pest cover over the top of the loops and secure it at the sides and ends.

SUMMER PLANTING

Before planting, prepare the trellis for the climbing melons and the cages for the tomatoes and peppers. The trellis goes on the north end. Use cement wire mesh all along the North side. Extend it to the bottom of the top end plank. Staple the wire mesh to the plank. Use steel posts to anchor the wire. Drive the posts in as far as they will go and attach the wire to the posts. Use the 7'6" height. Only trellis the melons. I already have the wire mesh for this trellis. Use a steel post driver. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-3-in-x-9-in-x-24-in-Metal-Fence-Post-Driver-901147EB/205960880

Cucumbers, if planted, will go in a cage, like the tomatoes. Beans, if planted, will go in a cage. Peppers will go in a cage, albeit shorter than the tomato cages.

TOMATO CAGES

I prefer caging, but this year I made my cages too small. They would not form into a circle because they were too small. Also I need cages that will occupy an entire one foot square as my summer bed will be 1' wide and I want to have 6 tomato plants in 6 or 7 feet, preferably closer to 6.

I made a tomato cage prototype using a small piece of concrete wire mesh I already had on hand. I made the cage to be 1-foot square, so that called for 2 spaces on each of the 4 sides, as each space is 6". I didn't know if I could bend the wire mesh into a rectangle. I found that if I put the horizontal wires on the outside of the vertical wires when I bend, I have much less risk of the connection breaking and more leverage for bending. Using a board helps immensely. After putting this together, one side was rounded too much, rather than having 90 degree angles at the bends. I used the board again and tied that end to the board using zip ties, and using pressure to bend the wires. I was able to get that side pretty much like the others. Here's a photo of the finished project.

It should push down into the bed along the sides, and then I will staple the bottom vertical wires to the sides of the bed. <span style="background-color: white; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">I can add posts on the East side to provide further support for the cages. I think 1x4s will suffice, attached to the side panels and wired to the cages. I think 1 post for 2 cages will be sufficient. That's what I did with my cages in the past. I will make one end pointed and drive the posts into the ground. I will also attach the cages to each other with zip ties.

<strike></strike>

My cages will measure 2 spaces for each side, 13 spaces high. After cutting at space 13, that will leave 12 spaces complete and 1 space with only vertical wires to put into the soil. 12 spaces complete will make the cage 6 feet above the raised bed.

The wire mesh is 10 spaces wide, so the 13 spaced will have to be cut from the rolled length. That calls for 39 feet of wire mesh for 6 cages.

I also figured out that I can bend the cut vertical wires so that they are out of the way. I secure them to another vertical wire with zip ties to pull as tight as possible, and then wrap with duck tape so the sharp ends are not exposed, as I've scratched myself a couple of times on the cages this year because I cut the excess vertical wires with a bolt cutter, and that left a short stub that can scratch.

WATERING

For 2021, I want to use drip tape because it already has the drip built into it. I'm not sure I need 2 lines per bed or 3 lines per bed, but I think 2 lines per bed will be adequate. The entire bed will be watered because of the worms and composting going on all the time, but I will install valves because sometimes rain will soak the east bed but not the west bed. The drip tape will be on top of the soil but under the mulch. If I go 2 lines per bed = 4 lines total x 12 feet = 48 feet. I don't know if I can hook the drip line to the main line I already have, as I still have plenty of it. I will still need a pressure valve and a better connection to the kitchen faucet.

COMPOSTING
The raised bed will allow me some space along the south wall and the apartment wall to have a small compost bin so I can continue to compost through the garden season.
So this morning I moved the potato plant to the back corner. I've noticed some.moths on the leaves - I hope they are friendly bugs.
I changed from the 5-gallon buckets to the totes, then to the red round buckets, then back to the totes after I already had all of my spring garden planted and the potatoes were doing well. I replanted the potatoes, but at first thought only 3 plants were going to make it, but now I have more and more sprouts coming up.

I planted the spring garden to the front (east side), including the peppers and herbs, and the tomatoes and vining crops along the north side and west wall. I figured the spring garden needed the sun that's available more bountifully along the east side, and much less so on the west wall. But then my tomatoes didn't get that much sun at this time of year.

But the real problem is the wind and excess rain -- how to prevent my plants being wind-driven and beat up and how to prevent oversoaking of the totes. We had strong winds again yesterday, along with more than 1 1/2 inches of rain the day before, with more in the forecast. I tried to brace up the potato plants but this morning when I woke, I knew I needed a more permanent solution to the wind and excess rain problem.

These are pictures I took on May 11, just a few days ago, and shows the arrangement of the garden.
I

I moved the totes around this morning. I left the watermelon/cantaloupe against the west wall, and the cukes/beans/peas against the north side because I have the trellises for them and because that's where the melons and cukes will get the most sun. I moved the potatoes, the onions/radishes/beets/carrots/garlic, and the lettuce/spinach totes to the west wall on the south side of the sliding door. I turned the lettuce/tomato tote around so the tomato plant is on the east and the lettuce is in the west part of the tote. I put the herbs next to the peas/beans and the peppers next to the herbs as those plants won't provide as much shade to block the sun for the melons/cukes. Then came the tomato totes. The tomatoes will shade the spring plants as the tomatoes get larger and larger, but maybe that will keep them from bolting longer.

I still have to protect against the wind and excess rain. Walmart has some paint handles, like broomsticks, that I'm going to get and put every so far across the front of the patio. Then I will attach plastic to them to shield against the wind and rain when necessary. I will take the plastic down and put it up as necessary. I'm going to find something for a permanent wind/rain block on the north side to put up behind my trellis for the cukes/beans/peas. These pictures show the arrangement of the garden now.

The red tubs just were not working out -- their shape mostly, and I erred in drilling drainage holes 4 inches up instead of in the bottom, as the bottom portion turned into a sludge type of mixture. But, space was the biggest problem, as I could not put two rows of the tubs, because of their width. So on the 13th of this month, I changed back to the totes. That was a big job, and took a lot of heavy lifting and bending over, and I paid the price with severe back aches for a couple of days, it is just now starting to get back to normal, and this is the 18th.

Along the south wall, I have the white large tote, which will hold strawberries as I can still get plants. If they do not do okay, then I will plant some other summer crops and try strawberries again next year.

In the SW corner, I put one of the large green-cover totes, and then along the west wall on the south side, the other green-cover tote. These are for my indeterminate tomatoes. I transplanted two of my three beefsteak tomato plants today, 4-18-20, in the SW one. I buried some food scraps in a trench in the middle of the tote, and added some coffee grounds and egg shells to the surface, mixed in with my hand rake. I used juice I made from grinding the egg shells to water the transplants. In the W tote, I will put in a purchased Early Girl and another variety of indeterminate tomato plant, probably a Jet Star, as those always did so well for me in Hutchinson and Damar. For staking, I cut two of my 1x2s in half, and put one at each of the long ends of the totes, and I will use cement wire to make cages for the tomato plants. I can get it from Mead's by the foot, for 99 cents a foot. Each tomato plant will have its own cage.

Along the east edge, I put the 5 smaller totes, 3 grey and 2 black. The black tote on the north, I replanted the potatoes I dug out of the red tub. If they do not do well, I will plant another summer crop. Next to it is the grey tub with spring crops -- a row each of, from east to west, radishes, beets, carrots, onion, and garlic. This tub has a layer of Pro-Mix Organic soil on top, as there wasn't enough soil from the tubs. The planting was done on 4-16-20.

Next to it, going south, is another grey tub. I divided it in half and planted 3 rows of lettuce and 2 rows of spinach. I reserved the unplanted half for a second planting.

Next to it, going south, is another grey tub which will be devoted to herbs. The last tub on the east edge, next to the strawberry tub, will be devoted to various peppers.

On the North edge, I placed 4 5-gallon buckets as there is not enough room for more totes. I used the last two buckets to put in the rest of the sludge from the red tubs. These are the two buckets eastward. I have another smaller tote that I have put next to the tomato tote in front of the patio door, and I will take some of the sludge from each of the two buckets and put into it, and then cover the sludge with some new Pro-Mix Organic soil, which I have to wait until the check from the treasury for the covid-19 CARE package comes in to buy it. I will add Pro-Mix to the two buckets, also, to cover up the sludge. I will use one of those two buckets for pole beans, and the other for pole peas. The smaller blue tote I will use for determinate plants, most likely cherry tomatoes.

Along the west wall on the north, I put a new green-cover tote which I just purchased this week for that purpose. In it transplanted my two watermelon cups and two cantaloupe cups. I mixed in some coffee ground and egg shells before doing the transplants. I put the two cups of cucumber transplants in the two buckets westward on the north side. In the green-cover tote, I plan to put some flowers in the front half of the tote. For a trellis, I am purchasing the cement wire, as that will make a sturdy trellis. I will be able to buy the wire at Meads and carry it home on my scooter, and cut the wires myself to make the correct size. The trellis will be along the west wall to the sliding glass door and along the north edge, and will support the watermelons, cantaloupes, cucumbers, beans, and peas. On the north side I will put in two heavy stakes to hold it up, and on the west side, I will put the ends of the trellis into the rim of the tote and secure them to the tote. I would have preferred to have the trellis in place before I did the transplants, but timing was not on my side.

So, I have 4 larger totes, 5 smaller totes, 1 small tote, and 4 buckets, that frame my patio and leave only the opening for the door.

I am pleased with this setup, and now just wait for my stimulus check so I can purchase the plants and the rest of the supplies that I need.

The one problem that is not solved is watering. I threw away the hose I had from last year as it crinked so badly. For now, I plan to haul the water from the kitchen faucet to the plants. I will put a lot of mulching on the plants to keep the moisture in, so hopefully it will not be a daily watering thing.

In the process of changing from the tubs to the totes, I lost track of the worm count in each. However, I did notice the worms are very large, and even in the sludge, they seemed to be thriving. Some of the biggest worms were in the sludge.
Then I put the plastic back on. The soil was a good temperature.

Later, I fed the worms in tub #2. It was a full tub so I took off the top soil and filled a 5-gallon bucket with it. I saw several worms near the top.

I then dug a deep hole to bury the food scraps. I put in a good amount of coffee grounds and then added the scraps. I found a bit of previous food scraps which I buried in the soil. I buried the scraps and put the plastic cover back on.

This one had the thermometer in it and though it was cloudy at the time, with not much sunlight today, the temp was.about 62, while the air temp was on the low 50s.
The tub was on the north end of the patio so it caught a lot of rain.

I scraped off some of the top layer of soil and added it to my 5 gallon bucket. That is to make room in the tub for a good layer of mulch when I plant. And also to get more soil for the tubs yet to be filled.

I dug a hole in the center to put the coffee grounds and the food scraps, which included the shells of 9 eggs that I boiled a couple days ago. I saw a lot of worms near the top, large ones, which shows that the soil is warm enough for them to not hover around the bottom as was the case when I emptied the totes, they are moving around in the tub. I put in a good layer of coffee grounds followed by the food scraps and covered up the hole. After that, I watered it with the rain water and put the plastic cover back on.

My 5-gallon bucket is now nearly full of soil for the next tub build. When I get another almost -full container of scraps, I will feed tub #2 and so on. When I start planting, then I'll put back in the 2-liter bottles with worm holes to put the scraps in so I don't have to dig around the roots. The soil was nice and warm, and quite fine, so I think I will use that one to grow my root plants like carrots, beets, and radishes. I think I'll divide one tub into thirds and do a spring planting of each, and then do a second fall planting. I didn't want them to say I could, and then to say I can't and have to move those heavy tubs.

I thought I would put 8 on mine, and one on Vicky's and one on Betty's patios. That would cause some problems watering and taking care of.

Then I resolved to put all 10 tubs, and possible one tote, on my own patio, and just work around the tight spacing. I have six on the front edge, and then 2 on each back side of the patio. I also have room for one tote on the southern half of the back of my patio. Depends whether I do a bucket-irrigation drip-system, a hose-drip system, or 2-liter bottle drip system. I haven't decided on the watering method yet. I followed the same process as before. I filled to the 12" from the top point with leaves and shred, with a whole watering container of water added. I added some of my coffee filters which have coffee stuck to them and a good helping of table scraps. I added soil content from tote #2 to about the 9" from the top mark and added the rest of my container of food scraps and 3 hefty scoops of coffee grounds. I finished adding the contents of the tote that weren't frozen, and it left a couple inches at the top to spare. I counted 24 worms while working, then found 2 more in the tote after the frozen parts thawed out and I transferred it to a 5-gallon bucket. I'm not filling the totes totally to the top anymore because I'm going to add potting soil and some other stuff to make up the top couple of inches, and then leave room for a good covering of leaves/shred as mulch. I realized I could have all 10 tubs on my patio and still work around them, although it will be tight and for some things, on the front tubs, I will want to work from the lawn for easier access. This is the last tote to transfer, so the remaining 3 tubs will have to get soil from some of the other tubs and newly-bought potting soil.
Each carton is supposed to have 30 worms, albeit of various sizes.

*Tub #1 - 50 worms

*Tub #2 - 15 worms plus a carton of worms = ~45, peas planted 3-5-20; 2nd planting 3-25-20 and trellis put up

*Tub #3 - 15 worms plus a carton of worms added on 2-22-20 = ~45. The soil was nice and not cold at all, though it is 57 and cloudy out and has been below freezing at night. The soil wasn't as wet as a wrung out sponge, so I added some water to the tub before I put the worms in. 8 strawberry "roots" planted on 3-5-20. 3-6-20 after seeing two youtubes where they soak the roots in water before planting, I recovered the roots and soaked, and then replanted. 3-18-20 pulled up strawberries because they were not taking.

*Tub #4 - 14 worms + carton worms on 3-5-20, 3-6-20 planted garlic, beets, radishes, carrots, and onions.

Tub #5 - 14 worms

Tub #6 - 18 worms, lettuce and spinach planted 3-6-20

<strike>Tub #7 - 26 worms -- used to fill tub #9</strike>
<strike></strike>
*Tub #8 - 3 from soil from other tubs, carton added on 3-5-20, potatoes planted 3-5-20; freezing temps in the mid-20's on April 2 and 3 burned the plants, only one has sprouted again as of 4-11-20.

Tub #9 -

So my worms have fared well over the winter, in spite of below freezing nights and some very frigid weather.
I got my pex pipe from Ace this morning and got my tub ready.

I filled with shred mix and some leaves.to the 12 inch from the top mark and then added water. Next came the soil content fro..tote #3 to the 9 inch from the top mark. I added a thick layer of food scraps comprised of some banana peels, some radish leaves, and some broccoli and cauliflower stalks. I didn't have any egg.shells to add. Then I added a lot of tea and coffee grounds I got from Marla from upstairs. Most.of the tea bags I tore open to expose the tea and I didn't include any coffee filters.

I filling with soil content. I noticed that food scraps were decomposing. For example, I found a couple of large banana tops that were put in whole but they easily tore apart into smaller pieces.

I counted 15 worms very nice size. Then when I finished putting the soil into the tub,.and it went to the 6" from the top mark. I saw 3 more when I sifted through the remaining mix at the bottom of the tote - so 18 worms total.

I put the plastic tent on and was done. It sits between the two with the flat plastic covers. It was snowing pretty good before I finished.
I had quite a bit of shred mix on top of the soil, which I mixed in with my compost after I got the bottom layer of leaves/shred mix put in the tub.

The leaves/shred mix came to 12 inches. I didn't put food scraps in the middle or on the top like I did with the previous tubs. I added quite a bit of water to the mix which reduced it an inch or two. This mix had.some soil mixed in with it.

I filled the tub with soil from the tote to the 9 inch mark and then added the food scraps which included the shells from 9 eggs I boiled earlier, the rest of my quick oats, and 3-4 handfuls of coffee. I filled more soil until I totally emptied the tote, which filled the tub to the 6 inch mark. I put the plastic tent over the tub as I won't get the pex pipe until tomorrow.

I counted 14 worms as I filled the tub, nearly all of them above the food so they should find it as they burrow down.

I put tub #5 against the south wall. The other pic is of tub #4 that I did previously.

Today I built tub #4 from the contents of tote #5. The soil was very moist, especially the layer of garden soil that I put on the bottom layer of leaves and food scraps. I counted 14 worms as I worked.

This time I didnt have as many food scraps, but divided them into about thirds. Also I was running out of quick oats so I just put one handful each time. I used the rest of my egg shells on the layer in the soil. I added the leaves in the bottom of the tote into my compost tub. Also as I was working with the soil, I took out large clumps of compost to put back into the bin.

After I finished I had room so I out the rest of the soil from the 5 gallon bucket. Then I just made a simple cover for the tub since I won't get my pex pipe until wednesday.

The first layer of leaves/shred mix is to the holes, or 4 inches. The 2nd layer is up to 12 inches from the top. And then the last food layer is about 6 inches from the top. The last measure with the yard stick is how far from the top the tub was filled from the contents of the tote.
Today I counted only 9 very large worms, but I may not have seen all of them.

The soil content in the tote was frozen all the way through because of the cold weather we have had. I broke the dirt up as I transferred it to the tub.

As before, I put a layer of leaves/shred mix at the bottom to the top of the holes at 4 inches. Followed by water and then food scraps and quick oats. More leaves/shred, leaving only about 12 inches.

I added more food scraps and quick oatmeal and then more soil.

I added the rest of the food scraps, more oatmeal, coffee grounds, and egg shells.

I finished adding the soil but didn't have enough to fill the tub. The soil left over from previous tub builds was also frozen in the 5 gallon bucket, so I just put on the plastic and left it at that. The plastic should keep it from freezing in our next cold spell.

I'll buy a carton of worms to add to it to being the worm count up.

P.S. On Monday, February 17, I emptied the green tote #6 which was being used to hold leaves/shred mix into one of the red tubs. In the process, I found 3 worms, 1 large worm and 2 small worms - it looked like they were 2nd generation. I thought there must have been one more large worm, but I couldn't find it. I added the 3 worms to red tub #3. I found 9 when transferring from a tote to this #3 tub, and then found 3 more as I sifted through the remains, bringing the total to 12 worms, and with these 3, that brings the total to 15 worms. I will buy a carton of worms to add to red tub #3, to bring the total over 40 worms. I added all of them to tub #2 to raise its count of worms from 15 to at least 45. I didnt count the worms but it looks like I got a good number.
I took the contents from the tunnel tote #2.

As with the first tub, I put a layer of leaves and shred mix in the bottom. I used a 5 gallon bucket and it nearly filled the bucket without pushing it down. I watered well and then added the first layer of food scraps which included some grapes and baby spinach. I added quick oats and coffee grounds.

I added another bucket of leaves mix and the same foods.

Next came the contents of the tote. I counted the worms as I did the transfer - 12 worms in the tote. I put quite a bit in before I remembered to put the last food scraps plus some egg shells.

I finished transferring the tote contents and it didn't fill the tub.

I took some of the remaining soil from Tub #1 that I had in the 5 gallon bucket. In the process I found 3 worms and added them to the tub, bringing the total worms to 15 for this tub. I'll buy another carton of worms and put all of them into the tub. I want to have 40-50 worms in each tub
I then put the plastic tent on.
The holds 106 quarts, or 26 1/2 gallons.

First I removed the plastic cover and the pex pipe. I then removed the contents of the tote, filling 2 5-gallon buckets. I still had content in the tote, so I started working on the tub.

I put a couple inches of combined leaves and shred, up to the holes I drilled. I then added some water. Next came some food scraps, 3 handfuls of quick oats, and 2 scoops of coffee grounds.

I then put another layer of leaves and shred, adding water again and then food scraps, 3 handfuls of oats, and 2 scoops of coffee grounds.

Next came adding the soil. After adding a couple inches, I added the rest of the gallon of food scraps, 2 handfuls of oatmeal, 2 scoops of coffee and 2 scoops of egg shells.

In the process of adding the soil I counted an amazing 50 worms, so obviously they have endured the winter well. I put the rest of the two 5-gallon buckets in and there still was room so I worked on adding the remaining content from the tote. Most of the worms were near the bottom of the tote.

I filled the tub entirely and still had some soil left in the tote, so I put the rest into a.5-gallon bucket, which I can use building the next tub.

The final step was to put the plastic covering on. On the next one I will attach the 3/8 " pex to the tub also.
I quickly replies that I was interested but it was this morning that I made contact with the seller and I asked for 10, all the same color if possible. He had me meet him at the Coop in Preston but the buckets are too large to fit in my car. So he delivered them this afternoon and I put them stacked on the patio.

They are nice, large tubs - about 17 1/2 inches tall and about 21 inches across at the top. Thay are all red.

Tonight I started getting #1 ready to put the contents of one of the totes in it
I drilled holes around the tub about 2-4 inches above the bottom - I started out closer to the bottom and then got higher. The plastic is very thick so it takes awhile to drill through using the 3/8" drill. I got some done then recharged the drill and then moved higher up. I put them on the side instead of on the bottom because I saw that in one of the Youtubes, the reasoning being it keeps a little bit of water in the bottom rather than all the excess draining out, so we will see how that works.

I put pex pipe on it to provide a plastic cover and expecting some nights when I have to cover the new plants. I had a piece of 1/2" and a piece of 3/8" left from my last purchase. I drilled holes in the rims to put the pex pipe through. On the 1/2" I secured them to the tub by drilling a hole through the pipe and the bucket and using

a pipe cleaner to secure it. That will keep the pipe from slipping down. I secured the two pieces together at the top by drilling a hole through both and securing with a pipe cleaner.

I'm not finished yet - I still have to secure the other 1/2" pipe to the tub, fill the tub with the contents of one of the totes and put the plastic on.

These tubes are a little over 5 feet diameter so the 5x8 sheets of remesh wire will work well as a cage.

Here are the pictures I took.
