Message From Editor

Dear Friends,

It is with regret that I need to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances I will have to stop working on Daejeon What's On and Daejeon What's Where.

As many of you know, these two blogs grew out of an earlier project of mine KAIST What's On [which continues as a project of the KAIST Undergraduate Students Association]. The aim of the project was two-fold namely (1) to let people know in English what was happening in and around Daejeon and (2) to help in the economic growth of the city and its region by encouraging people to spend money here.

While work on the blogs has been surprisingly time consuming, I have always enjoyed doing it and hope it has been of some benefit to you.

For now, be good and happy,

best wishes,

Simon

Films in Daejeon:Adrift in Tokyo [Japan]

*
Underachieving law student Takemura (Odagiri Joe) - on his eighth year and counting - has racked up quite a sizable debt in the name of higher education. The urgency of his financial situation announces itself in the form of hot-tempered debt collector Fukuhara (Miura Tomokazu), who comes bursting into his apartment one night demanding payment and threatening painful repercussions. Short of hitting it big on pachinko, Takemura has no idea how he can possibly pay back the sum. As the deadline closes in, Fukuhara makes Takemura an unexpected proposition: walk with him from Kichijoji (in western Tokyo) to Kasumigaseki (in central Tokyo), and he’ll pay the indebted student one million yen, enough to cover his debt. Bewildered but in no position to argue, Takemura hits the road with Fukuhara who, it turns out, just killed his wife and wants to turn himself in at a specific police station in Kasumigaseki. Getting there will take some time though, because many wacky people and surprise detours await them on the road in between.

Sidney Young is a disillusioned intellectual who both adores and despises the world of celebrity, fame and glamour. His alternative magazine, Post Modern Review, pokes fun at the media obsessed stars and bucks trends, and so when Young is offered a job at the diametrically opposed conservative New York based Sharps magazine its something of a shock! It seems Sharps editor Clayton Harding is amused by Young's disruption of a post-BAFTA party with a pig posing as Babe. Thus begins Sidney's descent into success - his gradual move from derided outsider to confidante of starlet Sophie Maes - and a love affair with colleague Alison Olsen, that will either make him or break him.

On Stage in Daejeon:Ballet: National Ballet of ChinaTuesday 21st & Wednesday 22nd of October 2008 [DJCAC]

...
After winning international fame with his 1991 film "Raise the Red Lantern", China's best known director, Zhang Yimou, reworked his masterpiece into a ballet. Combining elements of Western dance and classical Peking Opera, the ballet strives to achieve the film's visual intensity. Set in the warlord era of 1920's China, it tells the story of a beautiful but adulterous concubine caight in the household intrigues of a powerful mandarin. With its themes on women's rights, the role of the individual in an authoritarian system, and the heavy burdens of culture and tradition, "Raise the Red lantern" has long been probed by critics - and deemed suspect by government censors - for its potential relevance to modern China [www.piao.com.cn].
