A Message from Teresa at Living on the Cheap:

I’ve always been frugal, but until recently I was skeptical about using coupons. I try to eat healthy, and I don’t buy a lot of packaged foods. My household includes only one human (and four cats), so I don’t buy anything in bulk.

Why go through a lot of work just to save 50 cents? So, every week I threw away the newspaper coupon inserts without even looking at them.

Then I met Laura. She also has a household of one (and no cats) but she is a coupon maniac. She has a binder full of coupons, she collects extra inserts from her neighbors, she prints out coupons online, she has coupon apps on her phone and she plans her shopping trips with the strategic precision of a military campaign.

Look at what she got for less than $50!

She doesn’t use most of these things herself, but uses her strategic coupon skills to donate to charities in ways she couldn’t afford to if she were paying full price. She donates hundreds of dollars worth (at retail) of toothpaste, shaving cream, feminine hygiene products, lotion, shampoo and other personal care products, plus food items such as cereal and granola bars to organizations that help foster parents and victims of domestic violence.

As a full-time writer and business owner, Laura doesn’t have a lot of spare time for coupon clipping. But, with her system, she doesn’t need much time.

That the secret we want to share with you in our new book, “The Ultimate Guide to Coupons”: You can save a lot of money with coupons without spending a lot of time – if you know how to do it.

When Laura first preached to me about the virtues of using coupons, I was skeptical. I just didn’t see how the savings could be worth the time.

Then I went to Denver to see her. I was amazed that she was getting boxes of granola bars for 30 cents and tubes of toothpaste and shaving cream just for the price of sales tax.

So I came home and looked at what products I used.

Laundry detergent? Coupons. Shampoo? Coupons. Tea bags? Coupons. Cereal? Coupons. Cat litter? Lots of coupons.

Now if I just clipped a coupon for 35 cents off full retail price and got a $5 bottle of shampoo for $4.65, maybe it wouldn’t be worth the trouble. But if I used that 35 cents off coupon to get a $5 bottle of shampoo for 65 cents? THAT’s saving.

And that’s the kind of strategy we share with our readers in “The Ultimate Guide to Coupons.” You don’t just clip coupons. You use them strategically.

Then you get free toothpaste. And 70 percent off cereal. And even discounts on meat and produce.

For people with families who use a lot of everything, saving on groceries, cleaning products and personal care items is especially important.

I’m the oldest of six children. Money was tight when we were growing up. My mother struggled to feed eight picky eaters on a modest budget.

She was thrilled when she found a magazine article offering to send menus and recipes to match the family’s size and grocery budget. So she sent in our food budget, hoping for some new recipes.

The magazine editors responded that it was impossible to feed eight people on that budget and perhaps she should consider applying for food stamps. This became one of my mother’s favorite stories. She was proud that we ate quite well because of her budget shopping skills.

We want you to do as well, and we think “The Ultimate Guide” to coupons is an essential guide for moms and dads who want to feed their families well on a limited budget.

Coupons aren’t just for families, and they’re not just for groceries, either. You can use coupons for all kinds of shopping, plus dining, travel and entertainment. If you eat out a lot, you’d be crazy not to use the many dining coupons and apps available. Don’t own scissors? While paper coupons offer the best savings, smartphone apps are providing more and more ways to save as the coupons of the modern era.

Bryan started using coupons when he stupidly ran up too much debt in college and was digging his way out. It took him a while to come out of the coupon user closet, but now he proudly proves every day that real men use coupons.

Still not convinced? Here’s some of what you can learn from “The Ultimate Guide to Coupons”:

  • Where to find and how to organize coupons

  • How to “stack” coupons with sale items to maximize your savings

  • Which apps to use to get money back no matter what you buy

  • How to use your coupon skills to help others

  • How to read the fine print and get products for almost nothing (here’s where the free toothpaste comes in)

  • How to eat out or shop for less
